The place is significant for its landmark and townscape qualities. The place represents an essential element in a developing town, and serves to illustrate that development. The social interaction and changing ways of life demonstrated in the continuous operation of the hotel for over 80 years is significant.
Strategically located opposite the railway station on the corner of the main street, the State Hotel is a landmark. The hotel is a distinctive two story brick building which extends along both street frontages. The corner section of the building which was constructed in 1914 is delineated by the facade which is painted a cream colour. The original timber verandahs with corner gable have been removed, and nothing has replaced them. The hotel entry is on the truncated corner. A monitor window rises above the two storey section of this building. In 1927 extensive additions were made to the hotel, extending from the 1914 corner building, one wing extended north along Walton Street, and one East along Campbell Street. The extensions were two storey face brick work and responded in scale and design to the existing building.
Opened in c1915, the State hotel's first licensee was James McMahon Hanley. In 1927, the extensive additions to the hotel were done with Corrigin bricks. The extension serves to inform of the progress of the town of Corrigin.
