Statement of Significance

House, 221 South Street, is a single storey timber and iron house dating from c1913. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 221 South Street is a single storey timber and iron house with a symmetrical facade designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are timber framed with painted timber weatherboards. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The façade is symmetrical with a central front door with fanlight flanked on either side by timber framed double hung sash windows. The verandah has a separate dropped corrugated iron roof supported by timber posts. The rear of the house has a skillion roof. A high steel fence to the front boundary line prevents further description of the front elevation.

History

The house was originally No 219. Fremantle Rate Books show that rates were collected from a house on the lot from 1924/25, however tracing back residents in that number through Post Office Directories determines that the house was definitely built by 1913, and could well have been built as early as 1904. The resident in 1913 was Henry Stapler, followed by Hector Williams (1914), Francois H. M. Hardouin (1915 and intermittently up to 1926), Jane A Logan (1927-1932), Joseph Sweetman (1933-1942) and James E White (1943-49). (Records cease after this.) The physical appearance of the house (a simple worker’s cottage in the Victorian Georgian style) indicates it dates from c1910. The 1948 aerial photograph (Fremantle) shows the house and outbuildings as they remain today. There are no houses to the west until No. 215 and to the east until the lots where current 225 & 227 are located (then Nos. 221 & 223). The sewerage map (No. 2197) c1950, shows the house as No. 219. It is a small weatherboard house on the corner with a verandah along the South Street elevation, and two outbuildings in the rear yard (a shed/wash house and wc), with a well beyond. A real estate notice dated January 1998 describes the dwelling as an early century iron and weatherboard cottage with a hipped roof over the front and skillion sloping to the back. The photo shows a front verandah roof below the main house roof and with the verandah gable ends enclosed. The text describes a floor plan with a wide entrance hallway with two front bedrooms running off it, a lounge with an open fire and a third bedroom off the lounge, wooden floors, timber clad walls and high ceilings. The photo supports this with a central front door and a window either side. The text describes an enclosed verandah at the rear with a kitchen and renovated bathroom. There is also an outside toilet and various corrugated iron sheds listed. Later aerials show little change. As at 2016 there are some modifications to the rear flat roofed area south of the main house. The place was added to the Heritage List and Municipal Heritage Inventory on 10 January 2018.
