Statement of Significance

The place is a fine example of Federation Anglo-Dutch style, demonstrating a sound handling of materials, scale, detailing and decoration. The place demonstrates the commercial expansion of central Perth, in particular the legal district, during the gold boom. The place, together with the other buildings of Howard Street, strongly contributes to maintaining an increasingly rare example of turn of the century urban character of central Perth. The place has a long and close association with Parker and Parker, an important and prestigious legal firm in Perth, which is of both historic and social significance.

Physical Description

Commercial building with strongly contrasting materials and textures. Street facade embellished with florid motifs and strongly modelled arches.

History

The building was constructed in 1905 as a legal chambers. Due to the location close to the Supreme Court and government offices there were many lawyers located in the area. Parker and Parker moved into the building shortly after it was built. Parker and Parker were originally located in William Street where they had commissioned the construction a building in 1884. They remained in the building until 1964. Since 1964 the building has been used as legal chambers.

Integrity/Authenticity

High level of integrity. Medium level of authenticity as it is largely as originally constructed with detail intact.
