10945 Thompson Road Precinct
DEMOLISHED. Retained on MHI for historical information only.
Thompson Road was named for George Thompson (1838-1874), Fremantle's first town clerk (1871-73). The street is mainly residential, with some commercial development at the northern end between Alfred Road and McCabe Road. The majority of the houses were built c. 1900. Only a few lots on the street remained vacant in the 1920s. Duplex, 68 and 70 Thompson Road was constructed at some time between 1904 and 1922, by which time it was owned by Sarah Warne who lived at No. 70. Oliver McCall purchased the duplex in 1924/25, but soon sold it to J.G. Arenas. The duplex again changed hands in 1927/28, 1930/31 and 1934/35. Records indicate that No. 68 remained vacant for this time (alternatively, it may have been combined with the adjacent No. 70 to form a single residence). The place had been included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - BROWN -significant for making a positive contribution to the built environment of Fremantle. In June 2005, Duplex, 68 and 70 Thompson Road was partially demolished. It was described as a single storey asbestos and iron cottage dating from the Federation period. Symmetrical façade, replacement windows, no verandah. Rendered limestone retaining wall to front boundary line. Partially demolished, fenced off and in a severe state of disrepair.
