STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The Dudawa Public reserve has historic significance for its connection with the establishment of the Dudawa Community
Description: Site only. A 10 acre reserve which provided public amenities to the Dudawa area, including a dam, well, school and school house, tennis courts, community dip for sheep, and water stand pipe. History: The Dam was constructed with horses and scoop and was completed on the 13th of November 1908, being some 3400 cu yards in size. It was used to store water from the Geebulla Creek. Originally water was obtained from it by hand pump into a trough, later a windmill pumped water to a raised tank. The Government Well was dug in about 1907, but the water quality was poor, it was deepened in 1908 by J. R. Shepherd and a trough and windless erected. The School and Schoolhouse were of weather-board and corrugated iron construction. The school opened on 25th of July 1923, and closed temporarily between 19th of July 1925 and 17th of may 1926. It then continued to operate until December 1938. The first teacher was Mr Walter Henderson who boarded with the Lewis family being a local farming family. The teacher's quarters were built on the same site in the late 1920's, Mr Sawyer and his family being the first teacher to use the house. The school was also the centre of community activities such as the annual 'Christmas Tree' celebrations. The school teachers house was privately occupied from about 1944-1954 by the N. E. Stokes family. The site of the school has been marked with a plaque. The Tennis Courts were constructed about 1922 using a red clay surface. There were two courts and a bush sheletershed nearby. The Community Dip was paid for by local farmers and constructed by K & N H Stokes in abut 1950. Water was supplied from an overhead tank, the facility was last used in about 1962. The Stand Pipe was constructed in about 1970
