Statement of Significance

House, 14 Spencer Street, a single storey brick and iron house has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons: the place is a fine example of the Federation Queen Anne style of architecture; the place has landmark qualities and contributes significantly to the streetscape and the community's sense of place; the building designed by prominent local architect, E.G. Cohen

Physical Description

House, 18 Spencer Street, is a brick and iron house designed as a simple example of the Federation Queen Anne style of Architecture. The walls are rendered brick. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with corrugated iron. The front facade is symmetrical with timbered gable ends over two pairs of double hung sash windows which flank either side of the central front door. The verandah is under a separate corrugated iron roof supported by half timber posts with a timber balustrade between. To the front of the house is a paved parking area.

History

House, 18 Spencer Street was built c 1920. At one stage, it was the home of the Johnston family and later the Collett family (Bunbury jewellers). House, 18 Spencer Street has been attributed to prominent architect Eustace Cohen. Several other houses by Cohen are located in the vicinity. Along with similar houses in the area, House, 18 Spencer Street was later converted into doctors’ rooms associated with St John of God Health Care Systems. In 2001, the building was vacated when St John of God relocated to the new South West Health Campus.
