Statement of Significance

The Hercules Mine Site has some historic significance for its association with the mining district. It has further significance as the site of one of the earliest known graves in the area.

Physical Description

The Hercules Mine site consists of numerous decline shafts in a line. There are a number of ruins in the vicinity including a circular structure constructed of flat rocks to a height of 1.5 metres and 2.5 metres in diameter. Filled with earth, it possibly was used as a tank stand.

History

The Hercules Mine site is a mining area, which operated until the late 1890s. A 20 Head Battery and several buildings were constructed on the site. The battery was later moved to Marmont leases near Fenian in Meekatharra. Between 1897 and 1899 5,189.50 tons of ore were treated for 2,830.27 ozs of gold. On the site is the grave of H. Wong (1851-1892), one of the earliest known graves in the area.
