Statement of Significance

As one of the oldest pastoral properties in the state and the first taken up on the Murchison (in the early 1870's) Yuin is of great importance historically and has associations with the well known Burges, Wittenoom and Foulkes-Taylor families . It was the centre at which tracks serving as lines of supply to stations further north met and continued to Murgoo and two roads which joined at Yuin were gazetted as early as 1893. The Yuin pastoral lease includes the Yuin Reef gold mine . Gold was discovered there in 1890 but not worked until a few·years later . Thee homestead buildings which range from early structures of stone with mud mortar .through to the 1930's house of cement bricks illustrate developments over a period of more than 60 years and include items of particular interest such as the fittings in the old store and the use of local pine timber in the shearing shed which also contains an early woolpress, The individual ·structures of the dwelling are brought into harmony by the garden setting

Physical Description

The family dwelling consists of two houses built at different periods, what was once a detached dining room, kitchen and laundry building and the old store, originally a shepherd's hut, now all in use for accommodation and closely grouped together in an enclosed garden setting. Nearby are the former cart shed (now garage and oil room) the original stone shepherd’s hut (previously Recorded) and the stone shearing shed. Other buildings exist but have not been included in the assessment. The reef at the goldmine, discovered in 1890 but not worked for a few yeas, was small but very rich and at one period over 300 people were at the site which had its own Post Office, store and hotel . The hotel was still in existence in the 1920's. Relics of the settlement, including the cemetery, are still visible. This cemetery and the graves on the bank of the Greenough river near the homestead are being referred to the Historic Sites Committee.
