26090 Holland/Forrest Street Heritage Area
57 Holland Street is a single storey timber and iron house constructed as a simple variation of the Inter-War Californian Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are painted timber weatherboard and fibre cement clad. The roof is hipped and corrugated iron clad. The verandah sits under a separate half gable roof and is supported by timber posts and has a timber weatherboard balustrade. The half gable is timber battened and roughcast rendered. The front façade has timber casement windows. The roof has prominent solar panels.
The house is on Lot 1735. It was built by the Workers Homes Board house in the 1937/38 rate period. The first occupant was Thomas Roylance Black. Black was still living in the house until at least 1949 (when post office directory records cease). Aerial photos show that between 1985 and 1995 the lot was subdivided and another house built at the rear (57a). The house is part of a group of nine houses (51-67) built by the government for public housing between 1930 and 1940 on this part of Holland Street. Nos. 51 and 67 were demolished and rebuilt/heavily modified in the 1970s, but the rest remain largely intact.
