Statement of Significance

Duplex, 20-22 Bellevue Terrace is a good example of an attached pair of stone residences dating from the period of expansion of Fremantle in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.

Physical Description

Duplex, 20-22 Bellevue Terrace is a single storey stone pair with brick quoining to corners and window and door openings (no 20) and rendered (no22) and a zincalume hipped roof.

History

The origin of the name ‘Bellevue Terrace’ is doubtful, although in 1891 the area was subdivided by John Joseph Higham and known as Bellevue Estate. Bellevue Terrace was previously known as Higham Road. The short portion north of Fothergill St was originally Higham St. John Joseph Higham was one of the Town Councillors. His family arrived in the colony in 1853. Council rate books indicate the change of name occurred in 1923, although the change is shown on a 1908 sewerage plan. In 1900 lot 68 of 812/814 was vacant and owned by Herbert Abbott. A year later Duplex, 20-22 Bellevue Terrace was erected on the lot and transferred from Mr Abbott to J A Healey. The first occupants were Herbert Abbott, a contractor and Ernest Harris, a school teacher. In 1902/03 ownership of the lot passed to Frank Henderson who had a bottling establishment in Quarry St in 1907.
