The Old Flour Mill has considerable historic significance as an industrial site which has operated in the town since 1911. Further, it is a historic reminder of the flour milling activities in Kellerberrin and is indicative of how industrial structures evolve over time and through different uses. The building contributes significantly to the built environment of the town. Given its prominent location and large scale the Old Flour Mill is a real landmark in Kellerberrin.
The Old Flour Mill is a large rectangular five storey building of rendered brick construction. The Mill features a large skylight structure to the corrugated iron roof, with many large windows to the west and east facades. Some of the windows have been replaced with tin. The name of the building is evident to the top of the southern wall below which are markings indicative of a previous extension. Some structures associated with the seed cleaning are attached to the west elevation.
In February 1910 Mr H.A. Stanes, for Ockerby, Lehrman & Co Ltd, Fremantle, purchased 10 acres of land on the north side of the railway line, just east of Millar's timber yard, for £300. The site was considered to be ideal for a flour mill given that it was located alongside the railway line and was also convenient for wheat teams travelling east and west of Kellerberrin. [Eastern Recorder, 23/2/1910, p3 & 2/3/1910] The original Union Flour Mill was built in 1910 with a frame of large jam studs and cladding of corrugated iron. [Eastern Recorder, 12/10/1910] Designed and built by Mr J. Bowden, the mill commenced operations on 11 April, 1911. [Eastern Recorder, 12/4/1911, p2] It produced flour, bran and pollard. The mill, which was remodelled with solid brick in 1949, closed in 1966 and was used as a storage shed. In 1978 the building was purchased by a farming syndicate and converted into a grain treatment plant. [PR8679/KEL2]
