A simple vernacular building, Used for farm purposes in the early days of the Irwin district. The farmhouse was a haven at times for governors, travelers, explorers and surveyors. The site is historically significant for this reason and for its association with Lockier Burges who first settled there.
The building is constructed with stone walls and pitched corrugated iron roof. The adjacent grave marks the burial of the first unofficial Post Master, John Armstrong.
Assessment 1983 Construction 1860 The farm building was built in 1860 as part of the original farm establishment. It was used in part as an unofficial Post Office until the official Post Office was established at the Irwin settlement nearby. Lockier Burges settled at the Irwin River on loc's 8, 18, 24, 86 & 132, a total of 120 acres, prior to 1852. The original temporary cottage he built on the River Flats at Irwin, 50 yards from the river. The homestead 'Irwin House' he built later on Loc 8 on higher ground above flood level. That homestead survives today but in a much altered conditon.
