The place is of historic significance as an example of a commercial building in the Old Port City of Fremantle dating from the gold boom period in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The place is of historic and social significance as a former Coffee Palace in the Old Port City of Fremantle.
Two storey building with rendered ashlar effect to the façade with zero setback from the pavement. There is a parapet with a decorative pediment featuring '1895 Victoria Coffee Palace' in stucco.
Originally a house, then a boarding house in 1890s, then the Victoria Coffee Palace from 1895 (on façade). Currently (2002), Backpackers Inn Freo-YHA Australia.
This place was adopted onto the Fremantle MHI and the Heritage List by the decision of Council on 28/09/2011.
