Statement of Significance

The first picture theatre built in Perth after WWI.

Physical Description

A large building originally known as the Regent Theatre built 1926 for George Hall. Facade has original pediment shape, rendered relief and decorative stucco detailing. The original ticket box appears to be intact.

History

Regents Theatre was commissioned by George Hall esq as a low budget operation during a time of relative economic hardship. The building was the only cinema operating along Great Eastern Highway as far as Midland Junction with the exception of the Rivervale Picture Theatre. The theatre had been positioned along a bus route and busy thoroughfare of Guildford's main street. The Regent was used by people in surrounding districts as far as Belmont and was used as a hall and picture theatre by the local community. Of interest, during session intervals a messenger would cycle between the Bassendean and Regent Theatres and exchange film spools.
