Mt Lyell Hotel is a fine example of the Federation Free Classical Style. Mt Lyell Hotel is a prominent element and landmark in the streetscape of Boulder Road. Mt Lyell Hotel has historic value as a demonstration of the development that occurred in Kalgoorlie around the turn-of-the-century as it became the service centre of the district.
A two-storey corner building built to the building line in the Federation Free Classical style (c. 1890 - c. 1915). The exterior of the building is decorative and features a balustraded parapet and an entrance porch crowned with an octagonal tower that enhances the asymmetrical form of the building as well as highlighting the entrance. The street facades of the building have been painted concealing the tuck pointing. The corner is expressed by a castellated turret with the name of the hotel written in mouldings on the turret. Verandahs wrap around the two street elevations of the building and the upper storey areas of the verandah are enclosed. At the corner of the two street elevations the verandah is set back, further emphasising the street corner. The verandah is timber floored to the upper level and displays a timber balustrading valance to the lower level. The verandah columns are steel (not original). Crude lead lighting to the windows and doors on the ground level appear as later alterations that probably date from the late 1920s period. Recent brick additions to the eastern end of the Boulder Street facade house a drive through bottle shop. There are concrete block additions on the southern elevation.
Mt Lyell Hotel was established as a licensed hotel and operated until 2000. It is currently being converted into a 'Fast Eddy's' franchise establishment. General Comments: The role of hotels was crucial to the social and economic life on the goldfields. If mines were the sources of the miner's wages, the hotels were the sinks into which a lot of it was poured. Hotels not only provided alcoholic drinks, food and accommodation, but provided men with comfortable surroundings quite beyond their normal experience. Hotels were also vital social centres for travellers and residents alike (Webb, 1993: 543-544
