Statement of Significance

This was one of the first houses, and the first brick house, to be built in Cranbrook. It is the oldest house still standing in the town. The house was built soon after the completion of the Great Southern Railway in 1889. Situated opposite the Hotel and close to the Railway Station, it was built for the Station Master. The longest serving Station Master to live in the house was David Borrett, from 1952 to his retirement in 1984.

Physical Description

The Station Master's house is situated opposite the Cranbrook Hotel at the bottom of Gathorne Street, within the grounds of the Railway Station. Built of brick, with a corrugated iron roof, the house has a verandah under the main roof across the entire front. A feature is the lattice work along the front of the verandah, supported by wooden pillars. The house was built with fire places in three bedrooms. There was no damp course, which caused problems in the 1970s-80s. In the 1960s various additions were made. A modern bath and hand basin replaced the original cement bath, and a laundry and toilet were built near the back of the house. A Fetler's cabin was placed close to the house at the back to act as a bedroom in the 1970s.
