History

Adelaide St is one of the earliest streets of Fremantle, appearing in the 1833 survey. It is named for Queen Adelaide, consort of William IV. Fremantle rate books show that the first owner from 1886 was William Dockray Jackson, who arrived in WA c1840. He was a Rottnest Island Pilot Boat Captain and Superintendent of the island from 1867-1885. Jackson died in 1897. In 1898, Jane Elizabeth Martin ran the building as a boarding house. The owner by 1903-04 was Maud Jackson, daughter of Captain Jackson. Subsequent owners were WA Trustees (1907-11), Dr Martell (1921) who ran a Doctor’s surgery, Dr Martell & H.H. Field (1923), Guglielmo Giacone and Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition (1951), who ran the building as a Lodging house (1962). In 1964 Edward Robert Connolly joined ownership with the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition. In 1968 the original building was demolished, and a shop was built by Edward Robert Connolly. Occupants since then include Ernest Robert Beech & Enid Goldsmith (1968), Hair Cosmo (1984-85) and Ferrari Formal Suit Hire (2008). Current building dates from 1968.
