Criterion Hotel is a fine example of the Federation Free style common in the Australian pub tradition as a two-storey hotel with verandahs and balconies over the pavement. The building is an important element of the streetscape of Hannan Street. The building is a landmark in Kalgoorlie. The place has historic value as a demonstration of the development that occurred in Kalgoorlie around the turn-of-the-century as it became a service centre of the goldfields. The place is significant for its continuity of use.
A two-storey building built to the pavement line with a balustraded parapet that features in the centre a highly decorative pediment. A timber verandah and balcony extend the length of the facade over the pavement. Criterion Hotel is built in the Federation Free style (Apperly, 1989). Although the building is small, the detailing of the building exhibits all the Federation exuberance of the hotel industry at the time. It has significant chimney decoration, unusual parapet and verandah design. The fenestration has some leadlight glazing evident in the street frontage. The building has undergone extensive improvements, including opening the ground floor facilities to the pavement (Laurie, 1995: 12).
The building was established as a hotel and continues to be used as a hotel. The Criterion Hotel was owned by Speed's (Laurie, 1995: 12). General Comments: The role of hotels was crucial to the social and economic life on the goldfields. If mines were the sources of the miner's wages, the hotels were the sinks into which a lot of it was poured. Hotels not only provided alcoholic drinks, food and accommodation, but provided men with comfortable surroundings quite beyond their normal experience. Hotels were also vital social centres for travellers and residents alike (Webb, 1993: 543-544).
