Statement of Significance

Aesthetically significant as an example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture. Typical single storey stone cottage dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area. Has undergone significant alterations but original form remains intact.

Physical Description

Single storey stone, brick quoining and corrugated iron hipped and small gabled roof house. There are two chimneys with corbelling and a dropped verandah supported by timber posts. A stone shed is extant at the rear of the house.

History

First built by John Bateman in 1880-81 as a 'cottage and piggery', the place was sold to John Middleton Ferres in 1882. Later the place was used as a dairy and for horse agistment. In the 1920s one of the front rooms became a grocery shop. (West Australian, 10 February 1993)
