Condition

A timber bridge described as ‘third class’ was constructed by contract  in 1907 at Woogenellup, 119ft long and 14ft wide.[1] The bridge remains in 2018 (MRWA 4324/ HCWA P11001), including portions of early split post and rail fencing on approaches.[2] In 1910, another Kalgan River bridge was completed, this time to replace an old structure reported as dangerous with a ‘first class’ 158ft timber bridge. The 1910 bridge was on the Albany-Cape Riche Road, a precursor to South Coast Highway, and was the one more commonly referred to as Upper Kalgan Bridge.[3] Summer floods in 1939 washed out the Upper Kalgan River Bridge. It was carried six miles downstream to rest against the Lower Kalgan Bridge, which escaped unharmed.[1] A replacement bridge was completed within the year (MRWA 4682/ HCWA P16090). It was replaced on a new alignment of South Coast Highway in 1966 (MRWA 891/ HCWA 11721), but the 1939 bridge was retained as a local road and remains in use in 2018. Another Upper Kalgan Bridge was built further upstream in 1953, on the Chester Pass Road (MRWA 550/ HCWA P16106).[2] This was part of works to realign and reform the Chester Pass section of the Albany-Lake Grace Road, which served both new settlement areas and ‘considerable tourist traffic’ had ‘troubled motorists for many years’.[3]A new Lower Kalgan Bridge (MRWA 4332/ HCWA P00089) was built in 1957, and trusses from the earlier bridge it replaced were retained and later included in the Register entry.
