An ancient spring which attracted both the aboriginal and the later European settlers.
Located on the Collie/Williams Road approximately 2km NE of the Quindanning/Darkan Road crossing and 20 km west of Boraning. The spring is on the NE edge of the creek about 200 metres upstream from where it crosses the Collie Road which is an upgraded version of the old Sandalwood Track. Near the spring which has now largely silted up is the remnants of concrete blocks and close by are two large fruit trees. Up the rise (about 50 metres) north is some evidence of a European dwelling/building.
Pastoral leases were held here from early times believed to be discovered by Surveyor Gregory in 1847. The name is spelt with §ome variations - Coolakin, Coolikin, Coolikan etc. Benjamin S. Ranford, a /brother to surveyor Ranford, renewed a pastoral lease No. 5558 of 4,000 acres near Coolikan Spring in 1884. (1) Lavender's had also had pastoral leases in this vicinity. There is a native legend associated with Coolikan Spring and Jennamartin-Williams crown grant "G". Coolikan is a corruption of a native word "Koolyakin", meaning a permanent spring. A native legend tells us that a "Jinji" (giant kangaroo) came out of Koolyakin and jumped to Jennamartin, ("Jen" meaning foot and "mart" a leg) and broke his leg or foot when he landed at Jennamartin, the name of a large rock which contains a depression.
