These two storeyed rendered brick and tile residences, in the InterWar Mediterranean cum Modernist style, has cultural significancebecause: - it is an example of a doctor-architect relationship providing a notable work of its time; - it is an accomplished work which marked a design departure for Rodney Alsop, prior to his premature death; - it is a sophisticated synthesis of two of the prevailing design idioms of the day, undertaken with a high level of workmanship and which retain a high level of integrity; - it is part of a cultural group and a townscape area.
Molyneux states "the most modernistic of Alsop's houses in Perth but also disciplined in a 'formal' Mediterranean manner."
The conjunction of doctor client and modernist architect had produced notable architectural results in Vienna and California during the first three decades of this century. This place provides an interesting parallel. Alsop was the architect for the University of Western Australia's Winthrop Hall and Administration complex. Some historical significance.
A sophisticated work which demonstrates competence in the prevailingMediterranean and Modernist design idioms of the day. The construction of the residences has been undertaken with a high level of workmanship. The place retains a high level of integrity.
