Aesthetically significant as an example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture. Typical timber framed single storey cottage dating from the first decades of the twentieth century. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area.
Singles storey timber framed and weatherboard clad walls and a zincalume hipped and gabled roof house. The roof has a rendered chimney and extends onto the verandah which is supported by timber posts. The following places form a significant group and contribute to the streetscape South Street; 75-77, 79, 80, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86,87, 88, 90, 91, 94, 98, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 109, 114, 140 & 142.
The site was originally allocated for War Service Homes. The house, 86 south St was erected in 1929 for Montagu Arthur Wilson, and built for the Workers Homes Board by J. Bovell for £673. On file at the Local History Collection: Photos from 1978.
