History

The Pemberton Picture Theatre was constructed in 1932 by Mr Allan Jones the travelling picture show operator from Busselton. Prior to the construction of the picture theatre films were shown in the Mill Hall. However Jones had a dispute with the Mill Hall Management Committee who he felt always cancelled his picture shows in favour of any other hall booking. He built his own hall in Ellis St and called it the “Adya Hall”. When asked by one of the Mill Hall Committee about the name he is reported to have replied, “because I’ve Hadya!” The Pemberton Picture Theatre is constructed of oiled weatherboards and iron and retains the original projection room. The building is probably the only purpose built timber picture theatre of its kind in the State. Internally and externally the building has been adapted to provide tourist accommodation. The changes have been made in keeping with the original building. Refer to 16.6 for more historical notes
