The first pastoral lease of the area was taken up in 1865. Up until 1906, Michael Brown of Narrogin held the pastoral lease over the area. Sandalwood cutters and possum trappers met and camped by the lakeside. In 1906 the area was surveyed, and the first agricultural selections were first taken up in November 1907. The lake has been the venue of many recreational and sporting pursuits since the earliest days. The first settlement in the Wickepin Shire, Gillimanning, often travelled to the Lake to do their family washing, picnic and enjoy a shooting party. The first organised picnic at the Lake was for the Malyalling Progress Association. Kangaroo hunting, duck shooting, sailing, swimming, jumping off the jetty, picnics, cruising on the steamer "Kookaburra", tennis on the shore, golf was established, and later, croquet. A Golf club, tennis courts and croquet club have all been established at different times on the foreshore of the Lake, as well as the Yealering Hall, and the jetty, and the memorial gates. The first meeting of the Yealering Turf Club took place in 1918, and the Lake track was one of the best country courses for the few years that it operated, with trains from Wickepin and Corrigin bringing people for the race days. When the lake was too wet one year, the course was relocated, and it had ended by 1923. The "Kookaburra" transported people to the other side of the lake where the swimming was better. R Roepke had a sailing boat, and on Boxing Day 1921 a sailing carnival was held. The jetty was constructed and completed before the carnival. The Railway picnics started in 1927, bringing people on the train from Wickepin, Corrigin and Narrogin at various times. They continued through until the 1950s. In the 1970s the swimming area was banked so that there was always water in there, even when the lake dried out. During the 1920s an initiative included the school children and general community in a tree planting project at the lakeside precinct, and many of the mature trees now in evidence are a result of those endeavours.
