History

The Bunbury campus of Edith Cowan University opened in 1986 as the Bunbury Institute of Advanced Education, a branch of West Australian College of Advanced Education [WACAE]. Previous to this the Bunbury Council and State Government had envisaged a tertiary education institution in Bunbury for some years. The opening of the Institute was a fundamental part of the Bunbury 2000 plan, a State Government policy document developed by the South Western Development Authority (est 1983). The objective of the policy was to turn Bunbury into an alternative urban capital in Western Australia, improve services and facilities, and stimulate social and economical growth in the south west region of the state by the year 2000. This was to be done by opening a four lane highway between Perth and Bunbury, improving further education options, relocating several government decision makers and departments from Perth and increasing Bunbury’s appeal as a tourist destination by improving and expanding tourist services. The opening of Bunbury Institute of Advanced Education helped to relieve the pressure of country students competing for university places in the metropolitan area and also benefited other areas in the community such as local employers, government agencies, indigenous people and mature age students. After Edith Cowan University was established in 1991, the Bunbury Institute of Advanced Education became part of the new university and was renamed Edith Cowan University, Bunbury Campus. The campus is strategically placed alongside the South West College of TAFE and shares student residential facilities at Patterson House. There is also some student accommodation at Kinkella Park. Other shared facilities include a media lecture theatre and conference room and there are reciprocal arrangements for access to facilities such as the library. Since 1999, the facility has also been linked with the neighbouring South West Health Campus to integrate theory and practice units for the School of Nursing faculty. Other major faculties include Education, Business, Nursing, Computer Studies and the Arts. The support services are now linked to Edith Cowan University in Perth.
