Aesthetically significant as a fine example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture. Typical single storey stone cottage dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area.
Single storey stone and tuck pointed brick quoining and zincalume hipped roof house. There is a rendered chimney and a bull nosed verandah supported by timber posts between timber brackets and balustrades which are probably not original.
McCleery Street was named after John McCleery, a Fremantle merchant and auctioneer from 1879 to 1889. He died in 1911. House, 36 McCleery Street: Rate books record a cottage, number 79 on this lot (pt 12E) in 1900. This place was identified in the "Heritage Report on 19th century limestone walls and steps in Fremantle" prepared by Silvana Grassadonia, for the City of Fremantle, 1986. The use of limestone is part of the Fremantle landscape and gives the City coherence and character. Limestone walls were built around properties in Fremantle to prevent sand drift in response to an early building regulation dating from the 1830s. Limestone walls are one commonly encountered example of use of this stone as a building material, most of them dating from the 19th century and early years of the 20th century. Most of the limestone in small walls came from local quarries.
