History

Glenavon was the home of prominent businessman, town councilor and WA Volunteer, Thomas Stokes. The house was located next door to Stokes’ Aerated Water and Cordial Factory in Wellington Street (see B280). The house was built c 1899 for Stokes, shortly after he moved to Bunbury after purchasing the water and cordial factory from James Sloan. Glenavon was a large, symmetrical bonded brick and iron dwelling, with three brick chimneys with a large orchard and vineyard at the rear. At a later stage, the house was divided to form two separate dwellings. Glenavon was dismantled and removed from the site in 2000. It is not known if the house was re-erected elsewhere. Thomas Stokes instigated the Bunbury Fire Brigade and took on the role of superintendant. He was elected to the Bunbury Town Council in 1899, a position he held for some years. He also served 22 years (as at 1903) with the WA Volunteers and was a lieutenant in the Bunbury Volunteer Rifles. He was deemed to be one of the best shots in Western Australia, winning the Government prize in 1887.
