· The place is simple, representative example of a two storey brick hotel in the Federation Free Classical style.
· The place has associations with the development of the town of Greenbushes in the 1890s as a result of the establishment of a tin mining industry in the area.
The Shamrock Hotel site contains one large building, located on the south side of Blackwood Road, approximately 1km from the South West Highway turn off. The Shamrock Hotel has its main frontage to Blackwood Road, and is located in an open red gravelled site, with the only discernable boundaries being a parapet wall to the south and the Blackwood Road to the east. The hotel is a simple, two-storey brick and iron structure with prominent green roof-line punctuated by two corbelled chimneys and a double gabled frontage with separately articulated two storey timber framed veranda. The east façade is highlighted by contrasting face-brick and stuccoed bands that frame the timber framed sash windows.
The period from 1885 to 1914 saw considerable development of the Birdgetown/Greenbushes area. Factors in this development included prosperity from gold rushes and responsible government resulting in the establishment of a railway system into the area and implementation of government policies to encourage settlement. During this period, industries such as farming, the timber industry and a tin mining industry also grew.
