Statement of Significance

The former Bank and residence has local significance for its association with the commercial activities of the region for many years. In addition it has further significance for its representation of the bank style of its era. The building provides an important contribution to the streetscape of the town's main street.

Physical Description

The building has two distinct sections. The former bank building fronts directly onto the street and is of symmetrical design, the central entry door has windows each side. The front of the building shows a classic Greek influence, the masonry render being formed into four Ionic style columns. A decorative parapet above also shows the classic Greek 'treasury' style. Attached to the northwest of the bank building is the residence, constructed of brick. The corrugated iron roof extends to form a verandah to the east which is supported by timber verandah posts above brick bases. The verandah to the north is enclosed with fibro and a lean-to has been added to the west. The residence has timber framed awning windows, and there are two tall rendered chimneys with terra-cotta chimney pots.

History

Believed to be the E.S.A. bank building, which closed in 1941. Purchased in 1944 by Goldsborough, Mort (Stock & Station Agents) and operated by them from 1946 to 1962. Elders then took over their operations, and the building was subsequently leased from Elders-IXL From about 1985 it was used as the Homeswest office until 1989. Purchased by Risti Pty Ltd in February 1989, used only as a residence since mid 1989.
