The house was designed by architect Raymond Jones for himself and his wife Betty. It was the House of the Year in 1955.
Random-rubble granite faced brick east wall, glazed timber framed walls to the remainder; iron roof with a small lantern light roofed with asbestos slates. '"House of the Year' in 1955. The original plan reveals this as one of the first houses in Perth to overtly treat internal and external spaces as parts of the same continous universal space, in the Modern movement manner." Molyneux, Ian. Looking Around Perth no 387 p 70 "One of the earliest Western Australian Houses to illustrate the concept of the continuity of external and internal spaces, hallmark of the Modern movement.... More pronounced development of continuous spatial design is evident in the house of Raymond Jones (1956) at Haining Avenue, Cottesloe (Fig. 5.7) where the influence of the modernists Ludwig Mies vender Rohe and Marcel Breuer is also evident." Ill Fig 5.7a, Plan Fig 5.7b Pitt Morison and White, J. Eds. Western Towns and Buildings p. 146 In 1962 a new bedroom and bathroom were added. In 1992 D'Arcy Ryan added an extra wing in what he describes as sensitive harmony for period style and with taste. The Jones are apparently very happy with the alterations.
