The building is possibly the oldest extant building in the central business district and one of the oldest in the municipality. Its style was typical of the character of the earlier buildings of the town prior to rebuilding during the gold boom, and sufficient records of the original character exist to permit restoration and reconstruction.
The existing building is the result of several alterations to th original limestone-walled, shingle roofer and verandahed post office of circa 1840 - 1860. Early photographs show the building co-existing with the old police stations and gaol (the latter two now demolished). At the turn of the century, the building was used as a police station and bonded store and laterly it has housed clerical operations of the courthouse. Walls have been lined with timber stud-framed lining, and the floor has been raised and the former detached verandah roofs have been combine into the main roof pitch.
