Statement of Significance

Aesthetically significant as an example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture. Typical single storey stone cottage dating from the early twentieth century. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area. Has undergone significant alterations but original form remains intact.

Physical Description

House, 169 Forrest Street is a single storey stone and aluminium tile (not original) clad hipped roof house constructed in the simple Georgian Victorian style of architecture. Walls are painted limestone with rendered quoining to windows and entrance on the façade. There are two tall painted brick and rendered chimneys with corbelling extant. A separate skillion and iron clad roof verandah is supported by turned timber posts. The timber framed double hung windows have sidelights and flank the front entrance door with sidelights. There is a timber fence and gate to the front boundary fronting the garden.

History

Lot 10 of 176 was vacant in 1904/5. A cottage is recorded on sub 176 in 1914/15. The owner, occupier was Alexander Meikle. Post office directories list Meikle as the occupant of a house in this location from 1911. Numbers were allocated in 1934 at which time Alex Meikle’s house was No. 202. Numbers changed in 1939 and the house became No 185. It changed to No. 169 after 1949, at which time Mrs Meikle was still in residence. The house was for sale in 2016, at which time a floor plan published by the real estate agent online [https://www.realestate.com.au/property/169-forrest-st-fremantle-wa-6160] shows a typical floor plan of a central passageway with two rooms either side. Additions to the rear include a large living space, and an en suite. Aerial photos show that between 1999 and 2004 the lot was subdivided and two houses built at the rear. This place was added to the Heritage List and the Municipal Heritage Inventory on 10 January 2018.
