Swan Street Alignment is the a remnant of the street layout associated with the Pensioner Guard Village of 1851.
A small section of Swan Street remains adjacent to the Swan Hotel. The road underwent significant changes as part of a redevelopment of the area - Northbank.
Swan Street was one of the streets laid out in association with the Pensioner Guard Village. In 1851, Pensioner Guards accompanied each ship load of convicts to Western Australia and provision for their accommodation was made at North Fremantle by way of allotments along the Swan River foreshore. The making of a road between Perth and Fremantle provided work for the convict labour force. North Fremantle was the first Pensioner Guard village in Western Australia and by 1862, 21 cottages had been built on the first subdivision of 35 lots. The North Fremantle Military Village was seen as a model village and the pensioners and the village came under the control of Lt Colonel John Bruce. This place was included in the 'North Fremantle Heritage Study' (1994) as a place contributing to the development and heritage of North Fremantle.
