Statement of Significance

The Mitchell Street Precinct has aesthetic, historic, social significance in that it contains many of the earliest buildings to either be constructed in or relocated to the Denmark townsite. as well as examples of early and substantial tree plantings. Mitchell Street would have been the centre of much of the early civic and social activity of the community from after settlement. Taken together, the individual buildings are representative of the various needs and way of life of the early settlers and the amenities they had to support the local community. As well, it is reminiscent of an early streetscape through its informal and eclectic mix of form, fabric and layout. Although the precinct includes relocated buildings, these had been relocated many years previous and have therefore been used for a long period in their present location, thereby given them some level of meaning and significance in these locations.

Physical Description

The precinct encompasses all elements that are included within the precinct boundary, including all built elements as well as streetscape - incorporating hard and soft landscaping, verge and pedestrian treatments, setbacks, views and sight-lines. The precinct buildings are predominantly, but not exclusively, of timber and iron construction. The main cultural heritage elements within the precinct that are also the subject of individual listing in the MHI include: • St Leonard’s Anglican Church (1899) – also in the Strickland Street Precinct • Arts and Crafts Shop (1924) • Plane Tree (1896) • CWA Hall (1896) • Red Cross Shop - former Methodist Church (1926) [also on the State Register of Heritage Places] • Residence, 11 Price Street – former Teacher’s Quarters (1917) • Residence, 4 Brazier Street – former Waiting House (1914) • Denmark Museum – former Police Station and Lockup (1923) • Denmark Primary School (1935) • Group School (1927) • Seventh Day Adventist Church (1896) • St Mary’s Catholic Church (1928) • Infant Health Centre (1957) – also in the Strickland Street Precinct • Uniting Church • Murphy’s Workshop, cnr Mitchell and Short Streets Other contributing elements or possessing some significance, but that do not have individual listings include: • Anglican Op-Shop/Anglican Hall, The Mustard Seed, Mitchell Street • Residences, 24-36 Mitchell Street Overall, the precinct demonstrates an ad-hoc development sequence that is both organic and informal, giving the precinct an aesthetically pleasant streetscape, with informal verge treatments, mature plantings of mixed species and mostly generous setbacks. The streetscape is enhanced by its graduating elevation. The built heritage comprises a mix of original residential, public and civic buildings, although more recently some minor commercial activity is present owing to adaptive reuse of heritage buildings into shops and a restaurant.
