History

The street derives its name from John Stephen Hampton, the Governor from 1862-68, previously Comptroller of Convicts in Tasmania. His son, G. E. Hampton, was Acting Comptroller-General of the Fremantle Convict Establishment. Lot 166 of 134 does not appear on Sewerage Diagram 123, 1917. The rate book from 1920-21 shows vacant land owned by George A Lefroy. By 1925-26 the owner is Minnie Harvey and there is a notation in red: “new valuation” as a building/shop.
