25542 Workers' Homes Board and War Service Homes Precinct, Fremantle
House, 77 Holland Street is located on the south side of Holland Street, the single-storey residence is constructed of red brick set on a limestone plinth, with a terracotta tile roof. The exterior of the building incorporates little detail, apart from a simple pattern in the brickwork below the front gable apex. Internally, the building comprises two bedrooms, bathroom, lounge, kitchen, laundry, WC and an office and dining area in a rear fibre cement clad extension. Some original features remain, including the lounge fireplace, timber flooring and cornice details.
This section of Holland Street was developed by the Workers’ Home Board in the 1930s. House, 77 Holland Street was one of the last of the Workers’ Home Board houses built in this area, just prior to the suspension of all WHB building activity in December 1941. The rest of Holland Street had been developed by the Workers’ Home Board in the 1930s. This place demonstrates the type and style of houses constructed by the WHB in the 1940s, and in particular its return to using brick after 1938. Post office directories list the owner and occupant as Walter Marshall from 1940. He was there until at least 1949 (when post office directory records cease). Aerial photos show that the house was reroofed and extended between 1985 and 1995. The rear of the lot was subdivided and another house built c2002.
