Physical Description

The Edna May Gold Mine situated on the Common Reserve just north of the townsite. It is now a magnificent open cut filled with water. The site surrounding the open cut has been rehabilitated and revegetated.

History

The original mine was discovered in 1910 and the mine was fully operational by 1915. It was discovered by Alfred Weston and was named after his sister. Initial minin spanned from 1911-1922 when water forced it to close. The water that was pumped out of the mine was pumped into dams where it was used as a public swimming pool in 1915. Mining resumed in 1935 again water being a problem. war time and the availability of manpower ended activities in 1947. It was mined to a depth of 250 metres and was of a high grade ore. in 1985 ACM Gold, now Posgold commenced mining with an open pit and treatment plant. It closed again in 1991 producing 274,000 ounces of gold from 4.48 ton of ore at an average grade of 1.97 gms of gold per ton. The exploration decline was driven from the bottom of the pit to a depth of 270m when encountering less ore. The plant sold in 1992.
