The place is important for its role in the development of the Kindergarten movement in Western Australia. The place is of historic significance representing the development of West Perth as a prestigious residential area in the early 1900's. The place is important for its association with prominent persons in Western Australian history, such as Frederick Illingworth, Bessie Rischbieth and Harold Boas.
Two storey (originally) residential building with a round turret. Wide verandahs characterised by timber posts, and ornamental timber frieze, slate roof with terracotta ridge and tall chimney with terracotta pots.
Meerilinga was the home of prominent businessman, church leader and politician Frederick Illingsworth, MLA and was constructed in 1897. It was sold in 1909 and leased to tenants. From 1914 the building was leased and used as the Girls Grammar School. In 1921 the school was incorporated into the St. Mary's Church of England Girls School. From 1922 it was leased by the Kindergarten Union, later known as the Kindergarten Association, and was a teacher training college and kindergarten. There was accommodation for trainee teachers within the former house. It was the centre for the Association until 1978. In 2000 the property was subdivided and a residential apartment complex was built. Meerilinga is used for office use.
Medium level of integrity. Medium level of authenticity as it is intact with evidence of restoration.
