25542 Workers' Homes Board and War Service Homes Precinct, Fremantle
House, 79 Holland Street is a single storey timber and iron house constructed as a simple variation of the Inter-War Californian Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are timber framed and clad with timber weatherboards. The roof is hipped, gabled and corrugated iron clad. The front verandah is under a separate gabled corrugated iron roof. The gable ends are painted timber shingles. The verandah is supported by twin timber posts with timber weatherboards to balustrade height. The asymmetrical façade has timber casement windows. A simple timber framed corrugated iron awning sits above the casement windows. A face brick chimney is evident. The place has no front boundary fence.
This section of Holland Street was developed by the Workers’ Home Board in the 1930s. This Workers Homes Board house on Lot 1074 was built in the 1936/37 rate period. Unlike the rest of this precinct of WHB houses, this one is timber clad, whereas the rest were predominantly brick. The rate books list the occupant, Cyril Bergland, as occupying the premises from 29 March 1937. Post office directories list him as the main occupant until at least 1949 (when post office directory records cease). Aerial photos show that the house was reroofed between 1985 and 1995.
