The place is a good example of a stone residence in the Victorian Georgian style, representing the expansion of Fremantle in the gold boom period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.
Single storey stone with tuck pointed brick quoining to corners and window and door openings to the walls of the house which has a zincalume hipped roof and a chimney with corbelling extant.
East Street was the original eastern boundary of the Fremantle townsite. The house was built and occupied by George Dickens Wood, a plasterer, in 1898. A later owner and occupant was John Manuel, who arrived in WA from Victoria and settled in Boulder where he was connected with the mining industry for fifteen years. From 1911 he lived in Fremantle and was the proprietor of the Alaska Bus service that ran from Spearwood to Coogee. He was interested in social matters and was a keen member of Westralia Lodge UAOD.
