18626 Dongara Townsite
The former Delmage Cottage has historic significance for its connection with the development of the town and its association with the Delmage family. Further the building enhances the historic character of the town given its simple style and use of local materials. RECOMMENDATION Each of the buildings [Place Numbers 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29] contribute to the unique streetscape of Hunts Road which should be considered as a heritage precinct with development considerations made accordingly.
1996 This small stone cottage has a hipped corrugated iron which extends to cover the front verandah which is supported on timber posts. To the rear a skillion roof extends to cover a timber framed fibro clad extension. The front entry door is centrally placed with small timber framed double hung windows set each side of the main entry and to the sides of the main building. 2004 The place has been maintained by the owners.
This small cottage was built for James Delmage when he first arrived in Dongara in the early 1880s. He operated a blacksmith's shop (it was sited on the corner of Moreton Terrace and Martin Street where Dongara Hardware now stands). Delmage later lived in the two storey house (Place No. 27) and was President of the Irwin District Roads Board, 1903-1918. (Source: Jean Thurkle). The house was occupied for many years by Mr & Mrs Sid Criddle. (Source: IDHS Records)
