Statement of Significance

The homestead was architect designed and built at the end of the Great War when the pastoral industry was prosperous. Effective use was made of local stone in the construction. It was built for and owned for over 30 years by W.J. Butcher whose father and uncle were pioneers of the Murchison, coming from Victoria to take up their first lease in 1876. (presumably his mother was a pioneer too)

Physical Description

The main house is of local stone, has an iron roof is surrounded by verandahs and there are two bay windows. A detached building at the back contains jackeroo's quarters and is linked to another between it and the house in which are an ironing room and laundry, store and a bedroom which Mr Butcher used when visiting the station in later years when a manager had been installed. On the verandah of this building a bathroom and W.CC. were added. There is an elaborate wooden structure which was formerly the meat house. About 100 metres away is the former carriage house which had stables at the back - a solid stone building erected in 1922. It has the initials J.B.B. at one end and L.McP over the door at the other - the one referring to Jim Butcher and the other to a member of the McPherson family at Yallalong station.
