Statement of Significance

CALM School Classroom is of some historic and aesthetic significance as an example of a pavilion classroom of the type commonly erected to provide additional accommodation on school sites in the early to mid twentieth century and relocated to different schools as needed.

Physical Description

CALM School Classroom is located on Lot 145, Reserve 6058, number 5 Dundebar Road Wanneroo. The site is situated on the corner of Wanneroo Road in the business area adjacent to the City of Wanneroo offices in the City of Wanneroo's Wanneroo Ward. The house is setback from the road on an elevated site and is oriented in an east-west direction and located to the rear and north of the CALM Forestry House. The building is accessed via a bitumen driveway from Dundebar Road. Landscaping includes semi mature Eucalypts, native shrubs and ground covers. The classroom, which has been relocated, appears to have originally been constructed in the early to mid decades of the 1900s. The single storey timber framed pavilion classroom sits on timber stumps and is clad with vertical tongued and grooved timber boards to sill height with horizontal weatherboard lining to the vented gables. The gabled roof is low pitched and clad with Colorbond and has timber lined eaves and no gutters. There are entrances to the east and west sides of the building comprising a pair of timber panelled doors which are accessed via timber steps and a timber platform. The timber framed multi framed awning type windows are extant. Internally, the ceiling is lined with timber tongued and grooved panelling.

History

n 1907 the town site of'Wanneru' was gazetted. Although known locally as 'Wanneroo', it was not until May 1953 that the spelling was amended. Timber framed classrooms were frequently relocated according to requirements of the Education Department. In December 1947 approval was given to the Education Department to relocate this building from Highgate School to Wanneroo to reduce overcrowding. This classroom became an annexe to the old Wanneroo School. In 1992 the City of Wanneroo relocated the old Wanneroo Primary School building to Perry's Paddock but the annexe classroom remained as it was outside the road reserve.
