Statement of Significance

The War Memorial has social value for the local community commemorating those local citizens who participated in each World War.

Physical Description

The memorial frames the entrance to Wandering's Showground and Recreation area The memorial comprises two piers standing either side of the entrance. Each pier is made up of four, rock-faced stone blocks surmounted by a stone pyramidal top. The front of the stone piers have marble panels attached which are inscribed with names. The northern pier commemorates those died during the Great War of 1914-1918, the southern pier commemorates those died during the Second World War 1939-1945. The piers bear the dates on the pyramidal tops. A timber boundary fence stretches across the front of the showground and recreational area. The gravelled park has barbecue facilities including timber tables.

History

The people of Wandering honoured those in their community who volunteered for service in World War I and II by the erection of a War Memorial leading into the grounds adjacent to the Agricultural Hall.
