Statement of Significance

The house is historically important as an example of the farmhouse of the period and for its connection with the Sloan Fmn.1.ly. Older houses exist in the district but most are abandoned and have little hope of survival . Woodlands is increasingly used as a meeting place for Art Groups, scouts, Guides, Bush Walkers and people visiting the Reserve.) The Reserve is valuable for its wetland and its area of natural_Marsh land which attract birds and where native flora and fauna can be studied. With the continued development of the Kwinana industrial area, woodlands ·and the Reserve in which it stands will be of increas ing importance for both historical and environmental reasons .

Physical Description

The house dates from the turn of the century when it was the centre of a large farm run by the Sloan Family. Typical of the small farmhouse of the period, it had four main ·rooms, two on each side of the central passage, a front verandah and kitchen - back -verandah and either bath room or washhouse. It has solid limestone rubble walls with a corrugated iron roof. After being extensively damaged by vandals in 1973; when they burnt a lot of the woodwork, repairs mainly carried out by W. Procter began the following year. The badly burnt timber floors of the verandahs have been concreted and both the back of the cottage and the front verandah largely re built. -- The reserve, part of the original farm, has an area of 56 acres ( 22.67 Hectares) and consists partly of seasonal swamp in what is mainly a natural bushland setting. Between the cottage and the parking area however are a number of well grown pine trees and near the cottage is a very large Carob tree, a large old Mulberry, also an Almond and a Jacaranda. In 1976, with a Federal grant of $31,000 for the purpose, the Sh ire · erected a toilet block, put down a bore with pipes and a tank connected power, built fences·, the access·road from Wellard Road and the parking area. More recently a Fitness Tral has been laid out on the Reserve and barbecues .built near the parking area.
