Statement of Significance

The Dongara Backpackers has significance for its connection to the early development of the town. Further it is one of the few remaining timber framed corrugated iron clad houses in the town. Its prominent position on Waldeck Street adds to the character of the town.

Physical Description

This medium sized timber framed building is clad with corrugated iron and has a hipped aluminium tiled roof. The roof extends to cover verandahs to the west and east. The east verandah is enclosed with fibro and louvered windows. There is a lean-to to the rear with an attached pergola to the north elevation. There is a stone and brick chimney. A tall timber picket fence forms the west and north boundary of the property. The scalloped timber picket fence to the north has been replaced with the new picket fence.

History

This house was built for Will Brand in c.1920. Other long time occupants were Charles & Lillian Classon. Mr Classon was the post master at Dongara for many years. The Dongara Backpacker's hostel was opened in the early 1990s and continues with additional accommodation being provided at the rear of the building. (Source: IDHS Records)
