DEMOLISHED The 1880s dwelling beneath Prinsep House was associated with the early Roman Catholic Church in Bunbury. The later house was the residence of Bunbury mayor, J E Hands.
DEMOLISHED
It is thought that a house was built on Lots 319 and 321 in 1860 by Father Lecaille, the Catholic priest. However, the lots were not officially purchased by Bishop Brady until 2 April 1879 and as he bought them at public auction, it is unlikely that the land was already improved. It may be more likely that the original house dates from c 1880. Regardless, an early house on the site provided accommodation for Roman Catholic priests, whose church had been built nearby in 1857. Sometime in the early twentieth century (date unknown) the original house was razed except for the basement, and a new house built over the top. The house was at one time owned by the former mayor of Bunbury and prominent businessmen, John Hands. The basement of the original house has been permanently sealed and is not visible at any level and the later house has undergone a series of adaptations. In 1965, the house was converted to four bedsitter flats, which were in turn converted to professional offices in 1987. Both uses saw extensive internal modifications. The place has since been demolished.
