The dam is important for its association with the railways which helped develop the agricultural industry in the district. In later times its association with the upgrading of sporting facilities is of significance.
Located south east of the Williams Townsite, the N.W. boundaries join the Narrogin Road (and the adjacent Railway line / Station site). It's higher elevation meant that water from a catchment dam could gravitate to the railway station and be used for the steam engines which initially powered the trains. Enlargement of the dam, and the provision of road catchments to fill the dam have been carried out in later times.
One of two railway dams in the Williams Shire. (One is located at Congeling on the Narrogin I Dwarda line) and the Williams Dam being one of two on the Narrogin / Bo welling / Collie line - the other being at the Hillman, near Darkan. The new Hillman Dam and the Williams Dam were constructed during the Great Depression of the 1930's using sustenance labour - that is men working for their food plus a minute wage. When steam engines using coal were superseded by diesel locomotives in the 1960's, there was no immediate use for the water supply as the Great Southern Comprehensive Water Supply Scheme had connected Williams in 1958. However, with the necessity to water playing fields for all year round use, this resource was upgraded to increase its catchment to fulfil this requirement.
