Statement of Significance

The Grotto area has been an extremely important area for the hunter gatherer Aboriginal people. Large lithic sites and Aboriginal art are evident in the area. Since European settlement the Grotto has been an important part of the Wyndham social and recreational scene. Meatwork trucks were used from 1919 to bring members of the community and the meatworks to the site for picnics and swimming. The Grotto has historic, scientific, aesthetic and social significance.

Physical Description

The Grotto is a deep pool at the base of a rocky ravine. It is situated 36 kilometres from Wyndham and two kilometres west from the Great Northern Highway. The water level of the Grotto is approximately 70 metres from the surface rock. Access is via 144 steps from the southern access to reach the water level. The 144 concrete steps were a Lions project. The water depth is reputed to be over 100 metres although this has never conclusively been proven. The perimeter of the Grotto overlooks to Durack Ranges.
